MetOcean developed ARGOSPHERE, an oil spill tracking drifter, to meet the requirements of the offshore industry, ocean freight industry, and oceanographic scientific community.  Using the ARGOS satellite system for data telemetry, the ARGOSPHERE is an expendable, low-cost spherical Lagrangian drifter designed to track oil floating on the water and to collect sea surface temperature. The buoy's position is calculated using a GPS receiver.

The ARGOSPHERE’s robust hull design allows for effortless deployment from either ship or aircraft. Normal operating life for this buoy is 60 days. The Argos PTT is activated by removing a magnet located on the side of the hull.
