General
METOCEAN designed the Argosphere to the specifications of the scientific community. Our buoy is a low-cost, easily deployed, expendable Langrangian drifter. We designed the 11-inch spherical buoys specifically to track oil floating on the water and to collect sea surface temperature. The buoy's position is calculated using a GPS receiver. Position accuracy of +/- 10 meters is normal. This position is then transmitted as part of the Argos message. As many as 18 previous positions can be transmitted. We designed our buoys for easy internal access, allowing the customer to replace the alkaline batteries when needed. Normal operating life for this buoy is 90 days. The Argos PTT is activated by removing a magnet located on the side of the hull.
Sensor Sampling
GPS updates are selectable at ¼, ½, 1, 2, 6, 12 and 24 hour intervals. The sea surface temperature and battery voltage are sampled at the Argos transmission interval of 90 seconds and a 7-sample average is developed.
Data Transmit Sampling
The sensor and GPS data are formatted for Argos transmission, and reported information is updated every 30 minutes. A check sum is provided in the 32-bit Argos message when a 100% transmission duty cycle is selected. When using a 33 1/3% transmission duty cycle, the length of the Argos message is dependent on the amount of historical or archived data the customer desires to transmit. Message formatting, Argos ranges and reporting resolutions can be easily adapted to the customer's requirements.
