Successful Deployment of the First Generation Polar Ocean Profiling System (POPS)
(April 26, 2005)
METOCEAN Data Systems is pleased to announce the successful deployment of the first generation Polar Ocean Profiling System (POPS). On April 24th, 2005 representatives from METOCEAN Data Systems in conjunction with JAMSTEC braved the elements and deployed the first POPS system close to the North Pole during NPEO 2005.

The METOCEAN POPS system provides meteorological and oceanographic data collection in remote polar environments using IRIDIUM satellite telemetry. The POPS meteorological station samples barometric pressure, air temperature and ice temperature. The POPS oceanographic vertical profiling system samples salinity, conductivity and water temperature below the ice surface from 10 meters down to 1000 meters depth.

All data acquisition, processing, formatting and messaging are managed by the METOCEAN central processing unit, which has been adapted from the highly successful METOCEAN drifting buoy family of products. The internally developed processing unit has allowed METOCEAN to start developing the second generation POPS system which will include sensor upgrades and additional oceanographic capabilities.

If you require additional information concerning the POPS system, please do not hesitate to contact one of METOCEAN’s sales agents: sales@metocean.com.
