The SILC buoy system is used for acoustic event detection, providing a position and time of the detection. Unlike MASS, the SILC buoy is moored with the hydrophone tethered to the mooring anchor. Many MASS components and designs were used either directly or with modification in the manufacture of the SILC Spiral I prototype buoy. This design strategy combined with the use of COTS equipment made for an extremely reliable buoy.
