Since 1985, METOCEAN has been the world leader in the design and production of oceanographic drifting buoys.
The first autonomous drifter METOCEAN developed was the TOGA (Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere Drifting Buoy). The TOGA was well received by the drifting buoy community because of its extensive operating life and reliable operating performance. As the drifting buoy community matured, there became a need for a compact, low cost, spherical drifting buoy. In response METOCEAN developed the SVP (Surface Velocity Program Drifter), also known as a WOCE drifter. To date, METOCEAN manufactures over 400 SVP drifters per year.
METOCEAN has also developed a variety of other drifting buoys; such as the SLDMB, the PROVOR and the ARGOSPHERE. The SLDMB (Self-Locating Datum Marker Buoy) is utilized in search and rescue operations to track a man overboard, an object in the water and/or a vessel lost at sea. The SLDMB is currently used by numerous coast guards worldwide on a daily basis.
The ARGOSPHERE is a recoverable drifting buoy which is used to track and monitor oil spill incidents. The original ARGOSPHERE is equipped with ARGOS telemetry. METOCEAN has recently introduced the next generation ARGOSPHERE called the I-SPHERE. The I-SPHERE has the same tracking capabilities and sensors as the ARGOSPHERE however; the I-SPHERE is equipped with Iridium telemetry.
