The Compact Air-Launched Ice Beacon (CALIB) is an Iridium Satellite or Argos-reporting mini-beacon (NATO grade “A-size” sonobuoy configuration). The CALIB buoy may be launched from either fixed or rotary-wing aircraft. The design is based upon the highly successful AN/WSQ-6 series of buoys. CALIB buoys collect meteorological data in support of weather forecasting in polar climates. Oceanographers use CALIB for tracking ice flows.
The configurations available for the CALIB are ice temperature, barometric pressure, Iridium® Satellite or Argos telemetry, alkaline battery, and lithium battery.
