The Compact Air-Launched Ice Beacon (CALIB) is an Argos or Iridium-reporting mini-beacon (NATO grade “A-size” sonobuoy configuration). The CALIB buoy may be launched from either fixed or rotary-wing aircraft. The design is based upon highly successful AN/WSQ-6 series of buoys. CALIB buoys collect meteorological data in support of weather forecasting in polar climates. Oceanographers use CALIB for tracking ice flows.
The configurations available for the CALIB are: ice temperature, barometric pressure, ARGOS/Iridium® telemetry, alkaline battery, and lithium battery.
